Noctilucent Clouds over Paris

Noctilucent clouds, the highest clouds known, appear over Paris in the late summer. Composed of small ice crystals, they become visible at sunset when illuminated from below by the sun. These polar mesospheric clouds form under specific conditions in the upper atmosphere. NASA's AIM satellite has observed them since 2007, but much about their formation and behavior remains a subject of active research.
