On December 7, Mars passed behind the full Moon, an event called an occultation, as seen from parts of Earth. This stacked image shows Mars reappearing from behind the Moon, an hour after it disappeared. Mars was about 82 million kilometers away, near its opposition, when it was directly opposite the Sun in Earth's sky.
