Earth reached its closest point to the Sun, perihelion, on January 4th, 2023. This image of the Sun's disk was recorded less than 24 hours later from Sydney, Australia, using an H-alpha filter. This filter transmits a specific red light from hydrogen atoms, emphasizing the Sun's chromosphere, a layer above the visible surface.
