North Star: Polaris and Surrounding Dust
NASA APOD · Davide Coverta
COSMIC MESSAGE
Polaris is known as the North Star because it is the nearest bright star to Earth's north spin axis. As Earth rotates, other stars appear to revolve around Polaris, but Polaris itself remains in the same northerly direction. Thousands of years ago, Earth's axis pointed elsewhere, making Vega the North Star.
