NASA APOD · Mike Selby & Mark Hanson; Text: Natalia Lewandowska (SUNY Oswego)
COSMIC MESSAGE

The star WR 40, a Wolf-Rayet type, is about 100 times the mass of the Sun. It lives fast and dies young, exhausting its core hydrogen quickly. The stellar wind from WR 40 creates the elaborate patterns of the nebula RCW 58 in the constellation Carina. This image captures the intricate details of the gas and dust shaped by the star's powerful outflows.
