On the left, auroras light up the night sky, caused by particles from the Sun colliding with Earth's atmosphere. On the right, light pillars glow from ground lights reflecting off millions of tiny ice crystals. The light pillars are vertical columns because the fluttering ice crystals are mostly flat to the ground.
