In 1923, Edwin Hubble found a variable star in the Andromeda Nebula. This discovery proved that Andromeda was not a part of the Milky Way, but a galaxy far beyond our own. This changed our understanding of the universe's size. His work showed that our galaxy is just one of many billions.
