Pluto at Night

The night side of Pluto spans this shadowy scene. The Sun is 4.9 billion kilometers behind the distant world, as captured by New Horizons in July 2015. The spacecraft was about 21,000 kilometers from Pluto, 19 minutes after its closest approach. The image reveals Pluto's tenuous, surprisingly complex layers of hazy atmosphere.
