NGC 6164: A Dragon's Egg

NGC 6164 is an emission nebula created by a rare, hot, luminous O-type star, about 40 times as massive as our Sun. The star, only 3 to 4 million years old, sits at the center of this cosmic cloud. The nebula spans about 4 light-years and has a bipolar symmetry, resembling a planetary nebula. In another few million years, this massive star will end its life in a supernova explosion.
