The Butterfly Nebula, NGC 6302, spans three light-years across, with an estimated surface temperature of 250,000 degrees Celsius. Its central star is transforming into a white dwarf, shining brightly in ultraviolet light. The star is hidden by a torus of dust, but its energetic light ionizes the surrounding gas.
