Coronal Loops on the Sun

Our Sun frequently erupts in loops of hot solar plasma, called prominences. These loops jump off the Sun's surface, traced by spiraling electrons and protons in the Sun's magnetic field. Many loops in the lower corona are large enough to envelop Earth and can last for days. They commonly occur near active regions with sunspots.
