Gibbous vs Crescent

Early risers recently saw a crescent Moon near brilliant Venus. On September 19, some skygazers in the northern hemisphere witnessed Venus, in its waxing gibbous phase, pass behind the Moon's waning crescent. This telescopic image was taken moments before that occultation began. It shows the stark difference in illumination between the two celestial bodies.
