M104: The Sombrero Galaxy

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Sombrero Galaxy, also known as M104, is a nearby spiral galaxy famous for its prominent dust lane and halo of stars. This image, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, shows its distinctive shape. Much X-ray light has been detected from the galaxy's center, and unusually high central stellar velocities suggest a black hole a billion times the mass of our Sun resides there.
