Stellar Violence in 30 Doradus

NASA APOD · Anglo-Australian Telescope Board
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Large Magellanic Cloud hosts 30 Doradus, also known as the Tarantula Nebula, the most active star-forming region in our Local Group of galaxies. If it were as close as the Orion Nebula, it would span half our sky. The red gas signifies a massive emission nebula, alongside supernova remnants and dark nebulae. The bright cluster R136 contains many of the most massive stars known.
