Fifteen thousand years ago, a star in Cygnus exploded. The shockwave from that supernova is still expanding into space. This image shows the Cygnus Loop, a nebula formed when the fast-moving gas collides with slower interstellar clouds. The collision heats the gas, causing it to glow in different colors depending on the excited atoms.
