Galileo Galilei didn't invent the telescope, but he made it famous. He was the first to turn one to the sky, discovering craters on our Moon, moons orbiting Jupiter, sunspots, and Venus's phases. These observations, made between 1609 and 1610, supported the idea that Earth was not the center of the universe.
