COSMIC MESSAGE

Io, one of Jupiter's moons, hosts some very large volcanoes. Pele, named for the Polynesian fire goddess, is evident near the center of this image taken by the Galileo spacecraft in June. A large red ring around Pele indicates recent volcanic activity. The red color suggests the presence of sulfur, though the exact process of its formation is still being studied.
