Dubbed Amaterasu, this particle was one of the most energetic cosmic rays ever to hit Earth. When such a particle strikes our atmosphere, it creates an air shower of electrons, protons, and other elementary particles. The Telescope Array in Utah recorded this event in 2021. Scientists are still working to determine the origin of these incredibly powerful particles.
