COSMIC MESSAGE

Stars typically form in dense gas clouds within a spiral galaxy's arms. However, in galaxy NGC 1317, a burst of star formation created an unusual ring around its barred nucleus. The visible light image on the left shows older, redder stars, while the ultraviolet image on the right, from the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope, highlights the hotter, younger stars in the starburst ring.
