On November 29, 1996, the asteroid Toutatis passed within 3.3 million miles of Earth. This computer-simulated image shows what the spectacle would have looked like from the asteroid's surface, looking towards Earth. From Earth, Toutatis, also known as asteroid 4179, appeared as a faint object moving against the background stars. Toutatis follows an eccentric four-year orbit, ranging from the asteroid belt to just inside Earth's orbit.
