Sunspots: Magnetic Depressions

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Sunspots are dark regions on the Sun's surface, appearing dark because they are cooler than the surrounding areas. Each spot, often the size of Earth, forms where a concentrated magnetic field pokes through the surface. These magnetic fields inhibit energy flow, making the sunspot regions appear darker and slightly depressed.
