COSMIC MESSAGE
As comets approach the Sun, solar heat vaporizes their icy surfaces, releasing gas and dust in streams. These eruptions often form jets, like those visible in this digitally enhanced image of Comet Hale-Bopp from January 29, 1997. At the time, Hale-Bopp was brighter than most stars and easily visible in the morning sky. The background stars in the image appear as faint streaks due to the comet's motion.
