COSMIC MESSAGE
Jupiter's thick atmosphere is characterized by wind-driven cloud bands, known as dark belts and light zones, that remain fixed in latitude. At the boundaries between these belts and zones, wind speeds can reach nearly 300 miles per hour. This close-up, from the Galileo Spacecraft, uses near-infrared images mapped to visible colors to reveal different cloud layers near Jupiter's equator.
