COSMIC MESSAGE
Comet Hale-Bopp, photographed here over Val Parola Pass in the Dolomite mountains of Italy, was brighter than any surrounding stars. Its blue ion tail formed as solar wind particles struck ions from the comet's nucleus. The white dust tail, also visible, was made of dust particles reflecting sunlight. The comet was putting on a spectacular show away from city lights.
