Optical Transient Near GRB970508 Shows Distant Redshift

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The mystery of gamma-ray burst distances may have ended with a flash. Gamma-ray bursts are powerful explosions that appear in random sky positions, but their distances were hard to determine. On May 8, 1997, the Beppo-Sax Satellite detected and located GRB970508, quickly relaying its position to astronomers. Within hours, telescopes confirmed a distant redshift for the associated optical transient.
