Super Typhoon Winnie, a Category 5 hurricane, raged across the Pacific in August 1997. This image, taken from the Space Shuttle Discovery, shows the storm's immense scale. Its central eye alone measured eight miles in diameter. Winnie's powerful winds, over 160 miles per hour, impacted the Northern Mariana Islands before the storm eventually weakened.
