Olympus Mons on Mars: The Largest Volcano

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Olympus Mons on Mars is the largest volcano in our solar system. It rises 24 kilometers high and spans 550 kilometers across. This shield volcano formed from fluid lava, and its immense size is possible due to Mars's low gravity and lack of tectonic plate motion. The Mars Global Surveyor, which arrived at Mars just last week, will photograph the planet in detail for the next three years.
