Our Milky Way galaxy seems to be surrounded by a halo of gamma rays. These are the most energetic form of electromagnetic radiation, with over a hundred thousand times the energy of visible light. This surprising result is based on data from the EGRET instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. The false-color image shows the diffuse distribution of this high-energy glow, with brown and green regions indicating the gamma-ray halo.
