The Magnetic Carpet Of The Sun

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Sun's surface is covered by a 'magnetic carpet,' tens of thousands of magnetic north and south poles. These poles are joined by looping field lines that extend into the Sun's corona. Researchers used data from the SOHO observatory to map these small magnetic concentrations. This computer-generated image highlights these effects, showing white and black field lines connecting regions of strong magnetism.
