As the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft orbited Mars, its cameras captured sharp views of the planet's surface. This image of Valles Marineris shows sheer mountain cliffs over 3,200 feet tall. The extensive layering in the triangular mountain face was an unexpected discovery.
