Diffraction Spikes: When Stars Look Like Crosses

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Bright stars in telescope images often show unusual appendages called diffraction spikes. These are caused by the support rods inside reflecting telescopes. Light waves deflect as they pass near these rods, scattering away from their original path. This optical effect is a common feature in astronomical photographs of bright objects.
