This isn't a stellar nebula, but a spiral eddy formed near the North Atlantic Gulf Stream off the East coast of the US. Tens of miles across, these ocean current phenomena were discovered through observations from manned spacecraft. The Challenger space shuttle crew imaged this eddy during the STS 41G mission. It looks dramatically similar to twisting clouds of gas and dust found between stars.
