NGC 281: Starless with Stars

NASA APOD · Wido Oerlemans
COSMIC MESSAGE

In this narrow-band image of NGC 281, a star-forming region in Cassiopeia, the visible light stars have been removed. Stars were then digitally added back using X-ray data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory, shown in purple, and infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope, shown in red. This merged multiwavelength view reveals a multitude of stars in the region, about 10,000 light-years away.
