Twisted magnetic fields above the Sun's surface can trap ionized gas, forming huge looping structures called prominences. This image, taken on September 14 by the EIT experiment on the SOHO observatory, shows hot plasma escaping into space as a prominence breaks free. It was recorded in the light emitted by ionized Helium.
