The Dumbbell Nebula, also known as M27, was discovered in 1764 by Charles Messier. It is a planetary nebula, the type of nebula our Sun will form when nuclear fusion in its core ceases. M27 is one of the brightest planetary nebulae and can be seen in the constellation Vulpecula.
