This sequence of X-ray images from the BeppoSAX satellite shows the fading afterglow of a gamma-ray burst. The burst was detected on December 14, 1997. Within 6.5 hours, BeppoSAX's X-ray cameras recorded the first image, capturing the afterglow indicated by the white circle. Each image covers a field about the size of the full moon.
