RCW 86: Historical Supernova Remnant

NASA APOD · Martin Pugh
COSMIC MESSAGE

In 185 AD, Chinese astronomers recorded a new star in the sky, now understood to be a supernova. This deep image shows RCW 86, the remnant of that explosion, about 8,200 light years away in Vela. Narrowband data trace gas ionized by the still-expanding shock wave, which has been traveling for nearly two millennia.
