Sputnik means 'traveling companion.' The Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the Earth's first artificial moon, on October 4, 1957. It was a 184-pound, 22-inch sphere with four antennas. Its transmitters broadcast a continuous 'beeping' signal to Earth for 22 days.
