Maria Mitchell, an American astronomer, discovered the comet of 1847. She became one of the most famous scientists of her day, recognized internationally for her work. Vassar College appointed Mitchell the first woman Professor of Astronomy. She encouraged people to look beyond bright spots, to take in the vastness of the universe.
