The NEAR spacecraft flew past asteroid 433 Eros on December 23. NEAR was supposed to orbit Eros, but an engine shutdown prevented this. The spacecraft will attempt to return to orbit Eros in early 2000. This image sequence shows the asteroid's rotation as NEAR approached it.
