GRB 990123 Host Galaxy Imaged

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

This Hubble Space Telescope image shows the host galaxy of GRB 990123, one of the most powerful gamma-ray bursts ever detected. The optical transient, a bright spot below the center, was once visible with binoculars. This observation provided crucial evidence that gamma-ray bursts originate in distant galaxies. The transient has since faded considerably.
