Firing Lasers to Tame the Sky

Stars twinkle because Earth's atmosphere distorts their light with pockets of varying temperature air. Astronomers use lasers to combat this blurring. The telescope in this image, at ESO's Paranal Observatory, fires four lasers to excite atoms high in the atmosphere. This creates artificial guide stars, allowing the telescope to correct for atmospheric turbulence.
