5 Million Miles From Io

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Voyager 1 took this picture of Jupiter's moon Io from five million miles away. The round features with dark centers and bright rims are now known to be volcanoes, but at the time, scientists thought they were impact craters. Io is the most volcanically active body in the Solar System, constantly resurfacing itself.
