Warped Spiral Galaxy ESO510-13

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Spiral galaxy ESO510-13 is bent out of shape, unlike the flat disks of many spirals. Spiral disks are loose collections of billions of stars and gas, all orbiting a galactic center. While flat disks are thought to form from sticky collisions of gas clouds, warped disks are not uncommon. Even our own Milky Way Galaxy has a small warp, and the causes are still being studied.
