Upsilon Andromedae: An Extra-Solar System

NASA APOD · Lynette Cook
COSMIC MESSAGE

Astronomers announced the discovery of the first system of planets around a normal star other than our Sun. Previously, only single-planet systems had been found. Subtle changes in the wobble of Upsilon Andromedae, a Sun-like star in Andromeda, allowed astronomers to make the breakthrough. This star system is different from our own, with all three detected planets having masses greater than Jupiter's.
