The Cygnus Loop
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
The Cygnus Loop is a shockwave from a supernova explosion that happened 20,000 years ago. It is still expanding into interstellar space. When this fast-moving gas collides with stationary clouds, it heats them, causing them to glow. The nebula is about 2,500 light-years away in the constellation Cygnus. Different colors show emission from various excited atoms.
