Sundogs over the VLA

COSMIC MESSAGE
Sometimes, you can see more than one Sun in the sky. These are sundogs, extra images of the Sun created by ice crystals in Earth's atmosphere. Flat, six-sided ice crystals fall through the air, often with their faces parallel to the ground. When an observer is in the same plane as many of these crystals near sunrise or sunset, the sunlight refracts to create these luminous phenomena over the VLA.
