Equinox and Eruptive Prominence
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
On the equinox, the Sun crosses the celestial equator, making day and night nearly equal in length. This image from the SOHO observatory shows an eruptive prominence, a large, bright feature extending outward from the Sun's surface. These prominences are made of hot plasma, held in place and often ejected by twisting magnetic fields.
