Unusual Aurora During Solar Wind Dropout

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

On May 10, 1999, the solar wind, usually a steady gale of particles, nearly stopped. This unusual calm allowed the Sun's corona to flow out relatively unimpeded, creating beams of energetic electrons. One such beam reached Earth, causing this rare aurora. The image captures the sky over North Dakota, showing the green glow of oxygen and the red hue of nitrogen reacting with these particles.
