In 1974, a message was broadcast from Earth towards the globular star cluster M13. This diagram, made of ones and zeros, was sent from the Arecibo Observatory. While mostly ceremonial, it was an attempt at extraterrestrial communication. Even if received, M13 is so far away that it would take thousands of years for a reply to reach us.
